Eternal happiness

It first struck me many years back while in a transport on a road in one of the many cities that witnessed my childhood. I happened to see a young boy of inconsiderable means - a street urchin as the sort is referred to. He was laughing, his head thrown back in mirth, possibly over some comment of his begging companion or on witnessing something on the road. In that one moment, his means, the dirt, the hunger, the bleak future - they were all forgotten, sacrificied in favour of the mirth he had dipped his mind into. I wondered how convenient it would be if one could freeze time to that one moment - the boy then would be in happiness forever - no adversity would face him. We are not lacking in moments of joy - whatever our circumstances or station in life - our problem is that they are only temporal.

Some months back, as I was with some amusement and some pain, reflecting on my own state of mind, which had from relative happiness, plunged to some pain and with the passage of time and some more events, jumped to an even happier frame than before it sank. It seemed that any feeling of joy or sorrow seemed particularly intense (if not exclusive) to only those times when a change in circumstance happened. That it to say, there seemed to be no inherent elation or despair in any particular state (or set of conditions) - these feelings manifested themselves only when there was a change. So a change for a poorer set of conditions would generate sorrow and for the better - joy.

If I were to illustrate with an aid of a very simplified example - if you were on an income of Rs 100,000 a month and I were on Rs. 5000, and if both of us had been at our respective levels for some time, we would both be (all other things being equal) equally happy / unhappy. If however, I found my income the next day increased to Rs 100,000 my joy would be intense, equalled by the depth of your despair should you find your income fall to Rs. 5000. There is a side road here on the relation between hope / expectation and happiness, but I will go down that some other time.

So, the point being - happiness is a function of state change and not of any state in itself. Actually, to be more general, there are two sources of happiness - that of a state itself (Hs) and that of state change (Hc) where Hc seems many times higher than Hs.

Hc however, fades with time - it is felt keenly in the immediate aftermath of the state change, and fades with time as one becomes accustomed to the new state - and memories of the old fade.

Therefore, H = Hs + Hc(t)

With Hs negligibly small as compared to Hc(t)

so, H ~= Hc(t)

Which makes me look like one of those management gurus who illustate their points with equations or pyramids or concentric circles or if they be more accomplished - with equations below pyramids surrounded by concentric circles.

Anyway, taken in conjunction with the first case, we see that to have H as high as possible for as long as possible (which seems to be in some form or another, a common goal of man), our state itself does not matter if we were to rest on it - what gives happiness is only rapidly changing each state for the better, without resting much on our laurels. Meaning, money or fame for example, are of no use but more money and more fame are to be welcomed. Which also leads to a painful conclusion - no matter how much one gathers or achieves, one can hold onto happiness only by gathering or achieving more. If you can see a Tantalus somewhere - yes, continually longing for more (and getting it) is the only known way to happiness.

Now, for a spanner in the works. We have referred so far to happiness. Change the signs and we're talking sorrow. So,

S ~= Sc(t)

with an understanding that there is an Ss, but which is inconsiderable as compared to Sc(t) (remember the boy).

Now Sc(t) is a sorrow caused by the worsening of conditions. It too, thankfully, fades with time and memory, but always lurks around as long as there is a set of conditions worse than the current. Which means that the more one gathers or achieves, the more one is at the risk of Sc(t). So the most impoverished, fate slapped survivor is at little risk of an Sc(t). He has to contend only with Ss.

So, you see that your goal of eternal happiness can occur only by freezing time, or by rapidly changing states for the better. However, with each ascension of state, you risk losing it and landing up with Sc(t).

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

A panorama

In search of a strong cellphone network, I ventured today to the terraced top of my 10 storey building - a single flight of stairs from my apartment. I was struck by an increased activity of the brain - courtesy of happening upon a mass of mankind in a view.

A panoramic view of humanity I find far more inspiring and contemplation inducing view than any spectacle that nature in its infinite variety might conjure. Mountains and rivers do not hold in themselves the thought and torture of man.

Gazing onto a mass of humanity, you cannot but acknowledge the existence of millions such as yourself - each with his hopes and helplessness, anger and greed, sorrow and lust, broken hearts and indomitable ambition. Watching and acknowledge that the life you elevate to such importance - your own dreams and desires, sighs and sorrows, are not unique, is a liberating feeling. I think I meant humbling. Or rather - the view forces you to look at yourself and your mind differently. The realization that your lot in life is not in essence dissimilar to most others causes you to lose that sense of importance that you attach to yours.

And there's nothing like that occasional downward blow to the head to speed you on your way forward.

I wikied "pride" to find - in addition to religious examples and collective examples - three views tagged as philosophical. Interestingly, these, in contrast to the religious views, were all of a positive leaning towards pride.

The distinction came about as all the philosophical views (Aristotle, Nietzsche and Rand) were seeing pride as feeling of "I am worthy / capable of.." - which is a statement of ambition (unfortunately not always an objective evaluation of one's worth) and is thus a precursor to progress. Alternatively the opposite of such a feeling would inspire feelings such as "that is too big for me / I can't possible do that" and thus block any effort before it occured.

However, I was unable to eliminate from any definition / view of pride, the presence of another i.e. an entity / group that is a distinct set from those that that the pride is being applied to. 

Let us attempt some classification of pride based on the common though / purpose of the feeling. The below sets are not disjoint.

Collective pride - Pride as a community / group. eg. Nationalistic pride, linguistic pride.
  - Fosters bonding within the group
  - Unifies the members of this group against another group
  - Dissolves units at lower level and thus plays down differences - (e.g. nationalistic pride can dissolve linguistic / state pride)
  - Individual's Collective pride (see under individual pride)

Retaliatory pride - e.g. Gay pride. It might not have come about if homosexuality were not seen as undesirable / inferior and discriminated against. Have you heard of "straight pride" or "white pride" or "proud to be a hombre"? 

Individual pride - Whenever one feels proud of some achievement / attribute / possession - Materializes only when compared with those who do dont have that attribute. 
 - Individual's collective pride - This is an individual's feeling of pride which is related to his association with his associating himself with a community / others. This is not so much a pride propagataed by the community as one created by the individual. e.g. You're alone, watching India win the T20 WC. You're proud to be an Indian. You are not at that moment relating to other Indians. You are merely taking pride in another's achievement.

I'll exit with quoting one of my favourite lines which seems relevant here. Appears in P Yogananda's "Autobiography of a Yogi" - "Self-scrutiny, relentless observance of one's thoughts, is a stark and shattering experience. It pulverizes the stoutest ego."

Learn gratia Knowledgis

Can there be an unbiased learning of any piece of knowledge where the objective to learn is anything other than "to know"?

Argument- Any knowledge when sought with an ulterior motive - biases the study towards that motive instead of the knowledge itself, unadulterated. As a result, aspects of the knowledge that do not cater to or do not seem highly relevant to the objective are ignored or ill-understood.

Counter- Neccessity is the mother of invention, etc. All engineering came about as man learnt to apply science in order to solve other problems. A step further - the desire to know is always given birth from a different need - say a desire for food, or shelter, or entertainment or pride. So the "other bad impure objective" is the very reason that the "desire to know" was born.

Will need examples. 


Seated in a coffee shop. The gang - Plato's Republic, Naom Chomsky's Hegemony or Survival, a spinach-corn-cheese sandwich and The Inimitable Jeeves.

Objective: To save the day from sitcoms, football and a blurry passage of time.

Anticipated secondary benefit - A written word.

The presence of a contrast essential to the presence of any side of the story. That is to say that you cannot have one side without the other. You cannot have a "bright" without knowledge of a "dark". There can be no "sober" without a "drunk". You get the drift.

Becomes useful then to fill in the non-work hours with those things you don't do at work. Like think. Or converse instead of talk. Or not jugaad. In order to restore order to the universe, of course.

And that is the aim of this holiday.

Inter Alia

Among other things, January saw me progressing from an attached room to C's little place in BB Halli, Karnataka of a population of 1000 ppl, to Manila, Philippines, where the food challenges the village coffee as the prime contender for the "You block the view while I dump the stuff down the drain" routine. The coffee actually was just filter coffee forcibly dumped into water where it - true to its nature, the poor thing - refused to pass on its soul into the water. 'I am not instant rubbi... " were the last words that would echo from the drain every morning.

But, that documentary belongs not here. I am in the land of the squid balls. Of islands and seas. And of creatures from those waters on dinner plates.
